Back-Winding - Forth-Looking | Altec vs. Vitavox vs. WE
Starting with a match of 612B enclosures & GPA 604-II (thanks to all guys here who supported my project) - for some time past I'm wondering about next steps. I figured out several paths:
* Iconic System (all original): not possible to find (and as matching pair a diamant needle in the haystack)
* Iconic System (assembled by parts): my desire shootes ahead of my patience
* Wester Labo Iconic: pretty, pretty expensive and never audited
* WE 753C: possible but blows my budget
* Lansing 500 Monitor (Pair): these was offered to me by parts - but in the end too big and also very expensive.
* G.I.P. 7331: 70K (nothing more to tell about)
* my 612B + Jensen 610: no success (and no reason in the end to swap the GPA 604)
* my 612B + Altec 604B: no success to find a pair with original (working) cones
* my 612B + Vitavox AK15/40 + S2 + CN157 + CN232: meanwhile I collected all except the woofers - a pity, but the marked is blank - and it seems that there is no chance to catch them ...
Ok it might sound pretty naiv in 2012 - however to put it in a nutshell: live punishes those who delay. In times of the WWW there is no, really no option to find stuff/gear that is not contaminated by asking prices that might be paid by asian enthusiasts on a highly speculative level.
The only option is shifting to contemporary clones. In regard to this LM-Audio might by an opportunity.
Unfortunately the 22a replicas won't work out at my home. But while using the 612B enclosures, probably with Altec 803A ... mmh, could anyone suggest a match of WE555 (LM-Audio clone) with an Altec horn? Any experiences around? Some Asian guys like to match the WE555 with WE14 - but that means I'm back at my starting point.
I'd be glad for suggestions ...
(BTW - things never turn out the way as you expected ... by 'accident' (but not at the WWW markets) I got a couple of Vitavox Bitone 6201 & 3200, 60+ years in near mint condition. I will take them for a mono rig. Anyway nice to compare them to my Altec/GPAs ...)
Thanks & best,
